Abbots Wood harvesting facts from Forestry England:
- We will be thinning predominantly broadleaved trees (oak, beech, Sweet chestnut) to favour better stems, increasing structural diversity by promoting smaller trees of good form. We will also be removing larch where possible, a species susceptible to the disease Phytophthora ramorum and completing ash dieback work.
- The ash work will mainly take place along the Blue Rock trail. When this work is being completed the trail will need to be closed due to the nature of the work and the unpredictability of trees with dieback.
- We will be taking the opportunity to open up around Tides Pool, allowing more light to get in and improving conditions for wildlife.
- We are aware some of this work will be taking place during the summer holidays when the woods can be busier. We are doing this because we hope to complete the job in the drier months and also due to restrictions at other times of the year around things such as nesting birds.
- Some paths may be closed whilst the trees next to them are worked.
