Harvesting operations in Abbots Wood

There will be harvesting operations taking place within Abbots Wood from now until October.

We would like to remind families to take care and keep safe around the harvesting sites: take notice of safety signs and instructions from bankspeople as these are there for public safety and the safety of the forest workers; do not approach working machinery or go into an area where harvesting is taking place.

The map below shows in green the areas that will be worked.

Abbots Wood harvesting facts from Forestry England:

  • We will be thinning predominantly broadleaved trees (oak, beech, Sweet chestnut) to favour better stems, increasing structural diversity by promoting smaller trees of good form. We will also be removing larch where possible, a species susceptible to the disease Phytophthora ramorum and completing ash dieback work.
  • The ash work will mainly take place along the Blue Rock trail. When this work is being completed the trail will need to be closed due to the nature of the work and the unpredictability of trees with dieback.
  • We will be taking the opportunity to open up around Tides Pool, allowing more light to get in and improving conditions for wildlife.
  • We are aware some of this work will be taking place during the summer holidays when the woods can be busier. We are doing this because we hope to complete the job in the drier months and also due to restrictions at other times of the year around things such as nesting birds.
  • Some paths may be closed whilst the trees next to them are worked.
